TINA - THE MUSICAL... SIMPLY THE BEST!

BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS

TINA - THE MUSICAL

JANUARY 17 - 29, 2023

Recognized as one of the most influential artists of the 21st. century, Tina Turner has amassed a musical career spanning five decades. Turner has won 12 Grammys and sold over 200 million albums worldwide. It is no wonder why this fantastic story, Tina - The Tina Turner Musical, has come to fruition. Tina - The Tina Turner Musical runs from Jan. 17 - 29, 2023 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

If you have seen the motion picture What's Love Got To Do With It, based on the title of one of her hit songs, you pretty much already know Tina's story. There is something, however, to seeing her story performed live on stage before an audience.

The story begins with Tina Turner, brilliantly portrayed by Naomi Rodgers, meditating backstage at a concert before taking the stage. During the meditation, she begins to hear voices from the past and the audience is then transported to when Tina was a little girl singing in church. We are now at the beginning of her story. As a child, played brilliantly by Ayvah Johnson, Tina, known then as Anna-Mae, was a very vocal young child and sang in the church choir. It was very evident at that time she had a powerful vocal instrument. So powerful, infact, that she was occasionally told to simmer down during practice. From this young age, we could easily see a star in the making.

Fast forward to a teenaged Anna-Mae who goes out to a club with her sister and falls under the spell of a popular performer named Ike Turner, played to perfection by Garrett Turner, who , during his performance, gives anyone, preferably a female, to come on the stage to sing with him. After a few disappointments, Anna-Mae is encouraged to take the mic where she blows everyone away, especially Turner. A quick bond is formed and Anna-Mae begins to perform shows with Turner. As many of us already know, Turner is an absolute perfectionist that has to have everything perfect. Amazing rehearsals that seemed to go well were in fact very disappointing to Turner and he often took his frustration out on Anna-Mae in the form of domestic abuse. Tired of the abusive nature of their personal and business relationship, Anna-Mae, now known professionally as Tina Turner, flees the relationship.

This musical is perfect for those that are fans of Tina Turner and for those that want to get to know her more. The music numbers are performed to absolute perfection. Naomi Rodgers performs her role as if she is possessed by Tina herself. The dance moves, costumes, and acting are superb and everlasting throughout the performance. Set changes are brilliantly executed and are flawless in such a way that you sometimes don't even know that they are happening.

Tina Turner, who recently turned 83 years old this past November, said this about the show...

"It has been years since I toured the U.S. and I am very excited that my own musical can now bring my music and my story to my fans in their home cities across America. It's a homecoming and that is very special to me"

For fans of Tina, music lovers, and live performance addicts, this is one musical performance I recommend that you don't pass up on.
