THIS IS A MUST-SEE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE THAT WILL LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE
Since its off-Broadway opening in 2015, the musical Hamilton has been on the minds and lips of those that seek entertainment in the form of a musical. When the multi-awarded production announced that it would be making a run in Fort Lauderdale, I knew that this was my chance to experience what everyone has been talking about.
I am so glad I did.
This global phenomenon follows the life story of Alexander Hamilton, who is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Performers tell the story using rap music and lyrics. The story of Hamilton has dramatic highs and lows, taking in revolution, a sex scandal, blackmail, and death in a duel at the hands of the US vice president.
Hamilton, brilliantly played by Bryson Bruce, was an orphan after his mother died at the age of 11. Although he was born out of wedlock and his father abandoned him and his mom, his mother was still married to another man, and her estranged husband emerged after her passing to collect on her estate, leaving the young Alexander penniless.
How did the young Hamilton make his way out of the low end and make it to the top? For the answer to that question, I urge you to come out to one of the many offered performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Hamilton is one of the finest performances I have had the pleasure of seeing.
I will tell you that Hamilton started the first bank in North America, married Elizabeth Schuyler who bore their eight children, worked as a lawyer, helped forge the US Constitution, established a trading relationship with Britain, and was Treasury Secretary. Whew! What a lifetime of accomplishments that made history.
Besides the great acting, the music is delivered by a diverse cast. The musical's tagline is: “America then told by America now” People of color play the lead roles in the musical. It is a nod to how persons of color were always left out of the history books and gives Hamilton a contemporary edge. It is also more relatable to today’s audiences.
This musical is not just about Hamilton. It also contrasts his life with that of his friend-turned-rival Aaron Burr and how the two became enemies, thus ending with the infamous duel.
Hamilton is a must-see musical production filled with great acting, music, and history. The stage set is awe-inspiring and you will leave the theater wanting to experience it all over again.
